Book Review of Buttercream by Roslyn Hardy Holcomb

Buttercream (Book Cover)Buttercream is a charming little romance by Roslyn Hardy Holcomb that takes place in Alabama. The main characters, Poppy Blakemore and Matthew McAlister are polar opposites. Poppy is a sixties hippie wanna-be and Matthew is a military helicopter pilot. Poppy is all about protesting environmental pollution, while Matthew is a war vet with the physical and emotional scars to prove it.

Poppy and Matthew meet during a Rainbow reunion where she is selling the delectable pastries from her bakery shop. Matthew can’t seem to get enough of her sugary sweets and keeps coming back for more. It’s the start of a passion-filled romance. Holcomb’s writing style is easy and uncomplicated.

Buttercream unfolds gradually with much of the tension in the relationship centered on the political differences between Poppy and Matthew. The race of the two characters does not provoke much drama or controversy, which is refreshing in some ways and disappointing in others. Race is still very much on the table in America.

It would have been nice to see how the different families reacted to the budding relationship, since it’s very hard to develop a lasting relationship without family acceptance. Still, Buttercream is a fun read and Poppy and Matthew are engaging characters. Buttercream rates 3.75 stars.
