Book Review of Surprise Sleep Over by Sara York

Surprise Sleep Over (Book Cover)Surprise Sleep Over by Sara York is a short story about Nick and James two young men caught late at work during a terrific winter snow storm in Dallas, Texas. Luckily for both, James has as apartment in the building directly across the street.

Once the two of them move to a more conducive location the pace of the story moves quickly, but not with haste. Since it’s a short story about a sleep over between two young gay men attracted to each, sex happens. But, York takes time to reveal some of the character of these two men attractive young men. She makes it clear that Nick and James are forging a relationship, not just a one-night stand.

Surprise Sleep Over has its comic moments, such as when they are desperately searching for a fresh condom while in the haze of passion. There are serious moments, as well as, when both James and Nick realize just how important this one night could be for them. The story hangs on a secret that James is keeping from Nick. York is not quite realistic in how easily the issue resolves itself, but her solution does not harm the tale.

While the snow blankets Dallas, York creates some very warm scenes between James and Nick. The passion and attraction between them works and so does Surprise Sleep Over. It’s worth 3.5 stars.
